Atanarjuat, the Fast Runner (2001)
The first (and only?) major film written, produced, filmed and acted entirely in the Inuit language. Won several awards and was the highest grossing film of the year in Canada though little seen elsewhere.
It’s almost three hours long which adds to a real feeling of the arduous pace of life in the Arctic. The story is based on a a very old myth previously only told by word of mouth from one generation to the next.
Director: Zacharias Kunuk.
Starring: Natar Ungalaaq, Sylvia Ivalu, Peter-Henry Arnatsiaq
